There isn’t too much happening with Ethic right now, but I will be posting random things from time to time at http://jaredthomas.tumblr.com. Follow me there if you think you’re rad. Thanks.
As you know, Ethic Clothing Co. is currently on a bit of a hiatus until we wrap up some necessary responsibilities in our lives. The name ‘Ethic’ was not chosen randomly, however. This word has significant meaning for us in everyday life.
Ethics is defined as: “the discipline dealing with what is good and bad and with moral duty and obligation”.
One of the aforementioned responsibilities that is currently occupying our time is the completion of our High School education. Being in High School, I am continually exposed to people with varying personalities and ideas. Unfortunately, in talking to and observing the students around me, I’ve noticed a great deal of xenophobia and ignorance. It is severely disappointing to know that kids my age hold such judgmental and hateful opinions of fellow human beings based on such trivial qualities as sexual orientation, race, gender, age, religious view, or even hobbies and interests. I cannot understand a person’s rationale who believes that attraction to the same sex, variation in skin tone, chromosome makeup, years lived, theological beliefs, or chosen activity makes someone less of a human. I do not wish to write a detailed essay about why everyone should be treated with compassion and acceptance. I think we all know how important this is. Maybe we forget, or maybe for some reason we truly feel hate towards those who are not like us. With this writing I simply wish to comment on my observations and ask that everyone take some time to assess their views towards others and make an effort to live a life that benefits those around them instead of spreading hate and prejudice.
I understand that many of these animosities are advertised and glorified by popular culture and television and that while we repeat certain things, we don’t necessarily agree with the idea or meaning. However, we must think before we speak. If you are willing to speak against homosexuality, that means that somewhere in the back of your mind you believe that homosexuals are somehow inferior. This goes for race and gender as well.
Most importantly, Live with compassion towards others and do not let trivial qualities hinder a love for humanity.
Put very simply, if you are at all bothered by the idea of homosexuality; if you have ever made a racist comment or believe that certain races are less human or at all inferior; if you view men or women as objects to be obtained for increased social status or selfish sexual pleasure, or if you make no effort to improve the lives of your peers, please evaluate your reasoning, change your mind, and revert your actions.
Thank you for reading. If you agree with statements made in this article, please spread these ideas to family, friends, and neighbors. Always observe your surroundings and speak out against injustice.
Sincerely,
Jared Thomas
Our friend and professional photographer Zach Ramsey recently moved to Atlanta, Georgia where he has been living with and tour managing the band Woe, Is Me. He’s back in Florida for a few weeks and looking for people, bands, etc. to shoot. If you’re in need of any photo work, whether personal or commercial, get in touch with him. You can see his amazing work at www.zachramseyphoto.com.
I want to let everyone know that I have some of our ‘Sprocket’ tees still available. I would be wonderful if I could sell these last few so that we can put the finishing touches on our studio space. I’m willing to let them go for $12.00. That’s $3.00 off the original price of $15.00. These are high quality American Apparel shirts. They are very durable and extremely comfortable. The design is pretty cool too, in my opinion. If you are at all interested in purchasing one of these, you can do so via our webstore at http://www.ethicclothingco.bigcartel.com. On there, we accept credit cards and paypal. If you know me personally, I have no problem selling them in person. You can reach me at 772-766-4513 or jthomas@ethicclothingco.com. Just get in touch and we’ll decide how to make it happen. I have 5 Smalls and 5 Mediums left. Thanks in advance for any interest. Getting these sold would be a tremendous help.
P.S. If you know someone that might be interested in this offer, please tell them about it. The more people that know about it, the quicker they’ll go.

To all our supporters and friends,
As you know, Ethic began in November of 2007 and has been steadily progressing ever since. Recently, outside responsibilities have forced us to spend less time fulfilling the duties of running a business. We would never want to release products that were not of exceptional quality. For this reason, Ethic will be taking a short break. We will be using this downtime to focus on finishing school and saving up money. We plan to be back in full swing about this time next year. There is a possibility that new products will be released periodically between now and then, so stick with us. This company still means the world to us, which is why we’d only continue if we could give it 100%. Thank you so much to anyone who has bought a shirt or supported us in any way. You have all played an integral roll in our success and longevity. We’ll be back.
Until then, Stay True. Stay Ethic.

I was recently informed of an effort to conserve and protect an area of wilderness in Patagonia, South America. I came across a tweet from OBEY (@obeygiant) about a new movie called 180 South. The statement on Obey’s site reads:
“180 South is a new film retracing the 1968 journey of Yvon Chouinard (founder of Patagonia) and Doug Tompkins (founder of North Face) across South America. The film is told through the eyes of climber/surfer/writer Jeff Johnson over a six-month trek, conveying a unique voice for environmentalism based on experience rather than pie charts and idealism.
180 South and OBEY have teamed up to raise awareness about the destruction of one of the last remaining wild places on earth. The area, in Chile’s Patagonia region, is being threatened by relentless development, including the Hidro Aysen dam proposal. This includes the construction of five dams on the Pascua and the Baker River.
By creating these dams, irreversible damage would occur to the rivers and the ecosystems. In addition to the damming, a massive forest would be clear-cut for electrical transmission lines, scarring the landscape. Over 500 electrical towers would be built along the way, further threatening the wilderness. Please help us support the preservation of these untouched temperate rainforests, endangered species and the lives of local inhabitants.”
After watching the trailer for the movie and researching the cause, I was quite moved and felt the need to help out in any way possible. Please visit www.conservacionpatagonica.org and www.180south.com to learn more about this effort and to find out how you can help to save this beautiful landscape.
A few weeks ago, Brandon came down to Florida for a week from his home in New Jersey. It was great to spend time together and to get some things accomplished that are normally difficult due to the distance between us. We spent a lot of time working on our rental space which is where we will operate and print from once it’s complete. We started renting the space in October and have done considerable renovations since then. We have a while to go before it’s complete but we’re happy with the progress.
We also spent a lot of time walking and biking around town, talking about politics, society, future plans, our peers, life in general, and of course Ethic. It was great to have this time to share our ideas with eachother and to realize how similarly we think. We decided to make some big changes with Ethic and to take on a more responsible role within our community and the world. There are countless topics and issues that we feel need to be discussed and we plan to use Ethic as a way of getting our ideas across while hopefully attracting like-minded individuals. You’ll start to see more blog posts, tweets, etc. about some of these issues and ways that you can get involved.
